The TAKE Team of the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) is excited to have MACE, Holton High School In House Training class, and KTCN providing leadership, coordination and support for the 8th Annual Kansas Student Technology Leadership Digital Media Competition on April 1, 2009 in Manhattan, Kansas at the Kansas State University Student Union!
The purpose of this competition is to allow students in Kansas schools an opportunity to showcase
their work and to provide a venue to recognize their efforts and achievements.
Students will present projects they have developed as part of their technology
classes or organizations. Project presentations will be judged and awards will
be given at the end of the day.
This competition is open to all Kansas students in grades 6 thru 12.
Projects are judged by panelists from the field and to enhance continuity of the
judging process, registrants will denote the type of presentation by:
*Individual or Team
*Grade Level Spreads K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, or Public
*Content Area or Focus (Reading, Math, School Info, etc..)

A sample release form is provided here. Advisors are responsible for obtaining the proper permissions and following copyright laws. Understand Fair Use law does not apply outside the classroom.
DIVISIONS OF COMPETITION
Multimedia Presentation: Student(s) will demonstrate a
multimedia presentation which he/she has created. This may be a PowerPoint,
Hyperstudio, Flash, Ezedia, iLife or other multimedia presentation.
The time for
student(s) to present the project is limited to 7 minutes.
Entry Categories for Multimedia: Content Area & Grade Level Spread (PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8 or 9-12)
Maximum Number of Entries : 24 in Middle School; 24 in High School
Technology Instruction Integration: Student(s) will
demonstrate a project he/she developed to assist a teacher to integrate
technology into a class in his/her school. This project must have been used in a
classroom to aid a teacher in a classroom lesson. This may be a PowerPoint,
Hyperstudio Flash, or other multimedia presentation.
The distinguishing factor for this
category vs. the multimedia category is that the presentation was done for
INSTRUCTIONAL PURPOSES, and used by a teacher in the teaching of content.
The time for student(s) to
present the project is limited to 7 minutes.
Entry Categories for Tech Integration: Content Area & Grade Level Spread (PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8 or 9-12)
Maximum Number of Entries: 24 in Middle School; 24 in High School
Video Production: Student(s) will present an original video production they have completed that informs the audience of "School News", "Sports" or "Information Feature", Video Presentations on "Feature News" or "Sports" are limited to 5 minutes for the video with a 2 minute introduction, total presentation time is limited to 7 minutes.
Students may present the video in Quicktime, AVI, Windows Media Player, or Real Player. The video format must be platform independent (ie. Compatible with both Mac/Windows).
The video MUST BE presented through a local media. Time will not be allowed for downloading the video. Acceptable media formats include, VHS, DVD, CD, or Laptop.
Maximum Number of Entries: 24 in Middle School; 24 in High School
Video Production-Public Service Announcement: Student(s) will present an original video production they have completed that informs the audience on the topic to be determined at a later date.
Video Public Service Announcement: 30 Seconds in length
A Public Service Announcement, or PSA, is a non-commercial ad with a goal to change people’s attitudes about a particular social issue.
Be creative, and unique. Example: How bystanders can make a difference, or create your own slogan/phrase line.
Just remember your video must be 30 seconds. No more, no less. If credits are at the end of the video, they need to be after the 30 second mark, credits will NOT count against your 30 seconds.
Guidelines on Content
- Entrants should submit a PSA of 30 seconds in length on the topic.
- Entries must contain all original material (including music, images, etc.). No trademarked, copyrighted or branded materials, logos, products, etc., can be used without written permission from the owner or business.
- If used, the written permission must be presented to the Judges at the competition.
- PSA must contain a slogan: Example: Stand UP. Bullying. If you see it, you can stop it.
- PSAs must not contain any profanity or nudity.
- Students may present the video in Quicktime, AVI, Windows Media Player, or Real Player. The video format must be platform independent (ie. Compatible with both Mac/Windows).

Each PSA entry must submit a copy of the video on DVD upon registration. The DVD must be labeled with the students name, school, and advisors email.
Maximum Number of Entries: 24 for both Middle School and High School
Website Design: Students will compete and present an original website in an open category for school web pages, teacher web pages, community web pages, etc. Web pages MUST BE student designed. You may not present someone else's work.
Presentation is limited to 7 minutes.

LOGISTICAL AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Internet Connectivity
Wireless Internet Connectivity will be available in the presentation rooms,
however Internet reliability cannot be guaranteed! The KSU wireless
network requires Windows users to have the Service Pack 2 loaded.
Students shall present their projects from a local medium, not the internet.

Equipment
Teams should bring their own laptop for presentation purposes.
MAC users should bring a VGA Adapter cable for projector connection.
All competition rooms will have an LCD projector and Multimedia Speakers for
presenter use.
Video Competition rooms will have VCR's & DVD players as well.
JUDGING
To see how judges will score presentations, download the rubrics (use link at top of page). There
will be 2 judges in each room and judges will ask the student(s) questions at
the end of the presentation. Advisors may be asked to assist in the time-keeping part of the student
presentations!
AWARDS
Awards will be provided at the end of the competition based on presentation scores.
The following awards will be presented:
- Plaques will be presented to the schools for first through sixth place.
- Medals will be presented to students for 1st through 4th place finishes in each category and division.
- Certificates will be awarded to 5th and 6th place finishers in each category and division.
ADVISORS INFORMATION
Every school team must be accompanied by at least one paid adviser. No school
may "drop off" a team that is unaccompanied. Walk-in teams will
not be accepted due to room and time constraints.
Advisors will be responsible for their team of students and
will need to accompany their student team to each competition activity. When
their students are not competing, teams are encouraged to watch other student
presentations.
Advisors are responsible for obtaining all proper permissions and following all copyright laws. Students shall cite their resources. Copyright and citing sources will be part of the judging process.
RULES
Each school may bring two advisors and a group of up to 8 students. The
school may enter up to two projects in each event, in either the middle school or high school age bracket.
This competition is open to all Kansas students in Grades 6 thru 12. Students participating in Student Technology Leadership Programs are encouraged to participate!
Each student may participate in two events during the day, that may include two single presentations, one single and one team presentation, or two team presentations.
COSTS
Entry Fee: $30.00 per each student and advisor (regardless of entries!)
Meals/Snacks--Morning continental breakfast, lunch in the Union food court and afternoon
snacks will be provided.
REGISTRATION
We reserve the right to limit enrollment.
Registration is limited to the first 300 students and advisors to register.
Deadline for entries is on the Registration page, or the maximum of 300
registrants, whichever comes first.

Notice of Cancellation must be received by Tad Hernandez.
Cancellations: No refunds will be issued for cancellations received after March 20, 2009.
Payment of fees will be required to be paid even if you do not attend, unless you follow the cancellation procedure.
